Wrinkles 101

The most effective anti-aging solutions target skin issues at their source. In order to get rid of wrinkles, it helps to know how they formed in the first place! 

Wrinkles can be broken into two categories: static and dynamic. Static wrinkles form when our skin loses volume. Volume loss occurs as the body ages and slows its natural production of hyaluronic acid and collagen. Static wrinkles are addressed by restoring healthy skin volume with treatments like fillers or microneedling with PRP.

Botox is the perfect solution to dynamic wrinkles!

Dynamic wrinkles, on the other hand, form with the repeated use of our facial muscles. For example, the muscles of the face often pull on the skin when we frown or squint. Eventually, these lines will appear on the face, even when we are not making those expressions! This is due to the fact that the underlying muscle is overfiring and holding the wrinkle in place. 

Dynamic wrinkles are common and include glabellar lines between the eyebrows, horizontal eyebrow lines, and crow’s feet along the under eye. 

What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved anti-aging injectable. Botox’s active ingredient is a cosmetically-approved strain of botulinum toxin A. Botulinum toxin A is a neuromodulator, which means that it blocks the signals from the brain to the treated muscle. Botox relaxes the treated muscle, which in turn causes the wrinkle it was holding tight to vanish!

What Does Botox Treat?

Glabellar Lines

Glabellar lines, also known as frown lines or “elevenses,” are the vertical lines that commonly form between the eyebrows. Glabellar lines develop as a result of repeated squinting and frowning. Kristina will assess your facial structure and determine how to best address your glabellar lines. Botox injection in the Corrugator, Depressor Supercillia, Procerus, Orbicularis Occuli, and the Nasalis muscles can soften signs of glabellar lines.

Forehead Lines

Lines that form horizontally on the forehead are also treatable with Botox. Forehead lines form when patients raise their eyebrows. A targeted Botox injection into the Frontalis muscle will relax these forehead lines.

Crow’s Feet

Crow’s Feet refers to the small lines that form along the sides of the eyes. Crow’s feet are worsened when we smile. When we smile, the Orbicularis Occuli muscle spasms. Botox injections in this muscle will relax these lines to restore a smoother, more alert expression.

Migraines

Candidates

You are a good candidate for Botox if you:

• Have moderate to severe wrinkles
• Have forehead or frown lines
• Have crow’s feet
• Are over 18 
• Are in overall good health
• Have healthy skin elasticity
• Have positive but realistic expectations for the outcomes achievable with Botox
• Do not have an active skin irritation
• Do not struggle with eye ptosis

Prior to Treatment

Treatment

Treatment with Botox is quick and comfortable! Botox is administered in under 15 minutes. The fine, medical grade needle feels like a slight pinch that many people find tolerable, but a topical anesthetic is also available to keep you 100% comfortable. Kristina will inject Botox into the appropriate muscle group(s) to relax and soften unwanted dynamic wrinkles from the face.

If patients will be combining multiple treatments at Matrix MedSpa, Kristina will discuss your treatment process with you during your private consultation. 

Once your Botox is administered, you are free to get right back to your day! 

Botox & Dermal Fillers

Most people develop both dynamic and static wrinkles as they age. Botox and dermal fillers are the perfect wrinkle-fighting team! Clients often combine Botox and fillers for convenient, full-face rejuvenation. Dermal fillers like Juvederm restore healthy, long-lasting volume to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in these injectables is not only natural, it also has the benefit of stimulating collagen production in the area. The result is smoother, fuller, wrinkle-free skin that lasts for nine months, or more! 

Post Treatment: What to Expect

Mild bruising and swelling may occur after your Botox treatment. These conditions are normal and will be resolved within a few days. Intermittent ice application will help reduce these symptoms. 

No downtime is required after Botox! Some patients may wish to take a day or two off work to allow post-procedure effects to completely subside. 

Avoid touching your treated area for six hours after your treatment with Botox.  

Results

Botox will take two to ten days to take full effect. Botox will safely and effectively relax the muscles responsible for your unwanted wrinkle. The skin will relax: your wrinkle will vanish!  The skin on the forehead or under the eyes will be smooth and youthful- looking. 

Results of Botox last for three to six months. Additionally, Botox treatment is a preventative measure that preserves skin’s smooth, youthful features. Convenient maintenance appointments will extend the results of Botox for the long-term!
